The Uncomfortable Truth About The Nail Industry

Most press-on nails are made from ABS plastic — a petroleum-derived polymer that is not biodegradable. They're designed to be worn once and discarded. With the global press-on nails market growing at over 10% per year, that adds up to an extraordinary volume of single-use plastic waste.

In Australia alone, if just 1 million women wore press-ons once a month, that's 12 million single-use nail sets — and the packaging they come in — entering landfill every year.

We looked at that number and built Sistaco Press-Ons as our answer to it — plant-based, reusable, and designed to leave as little behind as possible.

What We Did Differently

Plant Based Material

The nail itself is made from bio-sourced polymers — derived from plant material rather than petroleum. This doesn't mean they biodegrade in a landfill (they don't — and we won't pretend they do), but it does mean we're not drawing on finite fossil fuel resources to make them, and they carry a meaningfully lower carbon footprint than standard ABS press-ons.

Designed for Reuse — Not Disposal

Every design decision in Sistaco Press-Ons was made with reuse in mind. The nail shape is robust and keeps its look after multiple applications. The adhesive tab system means the nail itself never gets contaminated with glue. The storage tray protects the set between wears. One set replacing 5–8 single-use alternatives isn't marketing spin — it's the result of deliberate engineering.

Minimal Packaging

Each set is packaged in a compact, reusable tray. We've deliberately avoided excessive outer packaging. The tray itself doubles as your storage solution between wears — so it's not waste, it's part of the product.

No Nasty Chemicals

Standard acrylic and gel systems contain HEMA (hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methyl methacrylate), formaldehyde and other chemicals associated with allergic reactions and nail damage. Sistaco Press-Ons contain none of these. The adhesive tabs are formulated without harsh solvents.

How it adds up over a year

If you get your nails done once a fortnight: that's 26 sets per year. Using standard press-ons: 26 sets to landfill. Using Sistaco Press-Ons (reused 6x average): 3–4 sets used to achieve the same 26 wears — with the rest of each set going back in the tray. That's roughly an 85% reduction in nail-related plastic waste.
